Higher Education in China

B.      Description

This is a course aimed at improving a global understanding of the potential students about higher education in mainland China. It familiarizes students with the history, development and culture of Higher Education by means of lectures and practicum. The Practicum provides an opportunity for students to get close access to the internal administration and management mechanism of one of the key universities in China through interviews with heads of administrative sections and study tour of newly constructed campus. Credit is granted when students fulfill the learning to the satisfaction of the practicum supervisor Students are encouraged to consider enrolling for the experience that will strengthen the base of their knowledge and experience in higher education in China, and they are expected to work on the practicum for a total of 88 hours within 2 weeks altogether.

July 11th: Registration;

July 12th: Opening ceremony, lecture on History of HE in China;

July 13th: Lectures on Educational Philosophy and Traditional Culture;

July 14th : Lectures on Organization and Administration and Comparative studies in HE

July 15th: Study tour (the birthplace of Confucius);

July 16th: Group presentation

July 17th: Lectures on Faculty Development

July 18th: Lectures on College Student Development and Student Affairs;

July 19th : Lectures on Disciplinary Planning;

July 19th -20th : Study tour (Qingdao campus of SDU);

July 21th : Introduction of The thirteenth Five-Year Plan in HE in China , innovation education

July 22th : Lectures on Conducting Educational Research and discussion on project design;

July 23th : Students’ report on proposed challenges of HE in China; Closing ceremony.

E.       Supervisor

Prof. Saiqiang Li has got her EDD from Peking University and is now the deputy director of the national Center for Teaching Advancement and Faculty Development, Shandong University. Her interests include student affairs and faculty development in higher education.

Prof. Jiying Han received her PhD in Education from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include teacher development, teacher motivation, teaching and learning in higher education. She has published about 20 international and domestic refereed journals such as Educational Psychology, Higher Education, Asia Pacific Education Review, Teaching in Higher Education, The Journal of Asia TEFL etc.
